Do you think that at 18, wanting a tragic life is strange?
I am an 18-year-old gay man and see myself as a tragic icon, like Anna Karenina or Madame Bovary. I want a life of fancy cocktail parties, heartbreaks, sadness, alcoholism, and homelessness in the end. I want to become rather wealthy and have an affair with a younger man like in The Reader and break up with him at an airport, wearing a grey peacoat and black leather gloves. The life you speak of is not the romantic sort of tragedy you fantasize it as. Alcoholism and homelessness are not merely tragic, they are miserable, painful, and horrible. "Tragic" superimposes a romanticism that in reality is not a part of it. I am a recovering alcoholic, and I had a lot of the things you are talking about, and if I could push rewind and back up to before all of that, I would. I just recently met a young man just a year or two older than you, who is struggling with alcoholism, and was living on the streets in 17 degree weather, contemplating suicide in the restroom of an all-night grocery store. When he left the store to go jump in front of a truck, he saw a policeman, whom he had the sense to ask for help, and who took him to the hospital. Go visit a skid row, see the clueless, vacant, hopeless stares of the homeless alcoholics with all their possessions in a shopping cart. Better yet, go to an open AA meeting and listen to the stories people tell about their lives.

You’d better hope that your misery ends at 28 if you pursue the life you describe.

OK, I need a plot device as to why the main character of a story will need to or be required to kill other civilians on behalf of a government or authority.

What if a criminal has very valuable information for the government (which would save many lives) and wants to trade the imformation for an assassination(s) for personal gain.

The other possiblility is that the targets have been contaiminated somehow. An infectious disease would be too difficult present too many logistical problems for your plot. What if civillians had accidental discover something secret . Perhap a government had planted a nuclear/chemical/biological device in foreign territory and engineers or tourists had stumbled across it. Perhaps they had seen an vital agent who was supposed to be dead.

The person being assassinated would need to be somewhere were the government couldn’t get at them or the government would use there own agents. On a moving vehicle, an isolated rig, some isolated location such as a cave, in a secure research lab or perhaps in a prison.

Your biggest difficultly might be in explaining why the character and the government should trust each other.

I don’t know if this delves too far into sci fi for your tastes, but you could relate it to the environment/global warming since that is a hot topic right now.

How about, some scientists have discovered that the earth has exceeded it’s "carrying capacity" (this is a term scientists have used if you want to look it up) and so the government has decided that some of the citizens need to be killed off to save the planet from dying out and killing everyone. So they hire certain trustworthy people that they have found through a selection process and have them trained to secretly kill off certain other citizens.

I’m really worried about the SHSAT results. Everyone is saying that Stuyvesant is really hard. People have to wake up at 5 AM, get home at 5 PM, and sleep at 2 PM. I really want to get into Stuyvesant but everyone is dis-hearting me. I don’t think that I can afford 3 hours of sleep, let alone 5!! I’m already too tired with only 6 hours of sleep each day, in the eighth grade.

So my question is: Is Stuyvesant better or Brooklyn Technical?

I want as many answers as possible!! Thanks!!

But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. And so, we’ve come to cash this check, a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.

We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God’s children.

It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment. This sweltering summer of the Negro’s legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. And those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. And there will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.

But there is something that I must say to my people, who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice: In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.

The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny.
